My giveback project is Sustainability Stories, for which I wrote the Victoria Street story. This project began as an idea by Transition Kamloops, Kamloops Naturalist Program, Kamloops Food Policy Council, and Kamloops Cycling Council members, among others. I heard about the idea for this project through the Next Generation Naturalist Program, discussed under ‘volunteering’.

This project revolved around community engagement in sustainability; we wanted to not only make community members and tourists alike feel more connected to the natural environments around them, but also bring a deeper understanding to our infrastructure in relation to sustainability.

To better describe this, the Victoria Street story, in brief, discussed how storefronts and building designs can bring connectivity to a city’s core, promoting more social connectivity, greenspace, and sustainable and innovative building technologies

After many group meetings where we updated each other on progress and provided feedback, these stories were turned into audiotapes and are specific to locations around Kamloops. The stories are meant to be followed in a series that sets listeners up for an easy bike route throughout the city to enjoy the day and then be able to listen to the following story once they’ve arrived in that area.
